Measure once, ride right.
Plain-English sizing for second-hand saddles, bridles, rugs, boots and safety kit — written by Lucy after a decade of fitting tack for Irish horses and riders.
Section 01
Saddles
Three numbers decide whether a saddle works for you and your horse: seat size (rider), gullet width (horse's wither) and flap length (your femur). Every saddle on ECI lists all three.
Seat size
Measure in a straight line from the centre of the saddle nail (the silver stud on the pommel) to the centre of the cantle. 16.5"–18" is the typical adult range. If you ride between disciplines, size down for jumping and up for dressage.
Gullet width
Measured between the points of the tree. Medium (M) suits most warmbloods and ISH types. Medium-Wide (MW) for cobs and chunkier sport horses. Narrow (N) for TBs and finer Arabs. A qualified saddler should sign off before you ride in earnest.
Flap length & forward cut
Sit in the saddle in your normal boots. Your knee should sit on the flap with 2–3 cm of leather in front of the kneecap. Short riders need a short flap, long-femur riders a long flap — labels alone won't tell you.
Panel type
Wool-flocked panels can be re-balanced by a saddler — ideal for changing horses. Air-flock and foam panels are lighter but harder to adjust. Look at the underside photos before you buy.
Lucy's note · Every ECI saddle is checked for tree integrity, stitching and panel symmetry before listing. If you're unsure, message Lucy with your height, weight and your horse's wither photo — she'll match you to stock.
Section 02
Bridles & Browbands
Bridles come in Pony, Cob, Full and Extra Full (Warmblood). All our bridles list the measured length of headpiece, cheekpieces and noseband — because Pikeur full and Devoucoux full are not the same thing.
Headpiece (poll to bit)
Run a soft tape from the bit ring, up over the poll, down to the other bit ring. Cob ≈ 90–98 cm. Full ≈ 98–108 cm. Warmblood ≈ 108+ cm.
Noseband (around the muzzle)
Measure two fingers below the cheekbone, all the way around the muzzle. Cob ≈ 34–38 cm. Full ≈ 38–42 cm. Warmblood ≈ 42+ cm. Two fingers should slide easily under a fastened noseband.
Browband (ear to ear)
Run a tape from the back of one ear, across the forehead, to the back of the other ear. Add 1 cm of breathing room. Cob ≈ 36 cm, Full ≈ 39 cm, Warmblood ≈ 42 cm.
Bit size
Width of the mouthpiece in millimetres or inches. Most warmbloods sit at 5.5" (140 mm), TBs at 5" (125 mm). The bit should peek 3–5 mm past the corner of the mouth on each side — no pinching, no sliding.
Lucy's note · Brand sizing varies wildly. A Pessoa Full runs small; a Schockemöhle Full runs generous. Ignore the label, trust the measurements we publish on every listing.
Section 03
Rugs & Sheets
Rugs in the UK and Ireland are sized in feet and inches (the back length). On the Continent it's centimetres. Both numbers appear on every ECI rug listing.
Back length
Measure from the centre of the chest, along the side of the horse, to the point of the buttock. 6'0" suits a 14.2hh pony, 6'9" most 16hh ISH/TBs, 7'0" a chunky warmblood, 7'3"+ for the big lads. Continental = back length × 2.54.
Neck cover
Detachable necks are sized to match the rug body. If you're buying a stand-alone neck cover, measure from withers to poll along the crest.
Fill (turnout)
Lightweight 0–100 g for autumn and spring. Medium 150–250 g for an Irish winter on a clipped horse. Heavy 300–400 g for fully clipped horses in deep frost. Always layer rather than over-fill — easier to add than remove.
Waterproof rating
1000mm waterproof handles showers. 3000mm+ handles Irish winter sideways rain. Look for taped seams and re-proofing history in the listing notes.
Lucy's note · Every rug we sell has been washed, re-proofed where needed, and inspected for tears, broken surcingles and chafed bindings. Faults are photographed front and centre, never hidden.
Section 04
Riding Boots
Riding boot sizing depends on three numbers: foot size, calf width and boot height. Get one wrong and you'll know within five minutes of mounting.
Foot size (UK)
Boot sizing runs about half a size smaller than street shoes — your foot needs to be snug, not loose. If you're between sizes, size up only if your usual shoe runs narrow.
Calf width
Measure in cm around the widest part of your calf, wearing breeches and a half-chap-thickness sock. Standard ≈ 36–38 cm. Slim ≈ 32–35 cm. Wide ≈ 39 cm+. New leather drops 1–1.5 cm with wear; older second-hand boots have already done their dropping.
Boot height
Stand barefoot. Measure from the floor up the back of your leg to the bend of the knee, then add 2–3 cm for the heel of the boot and the dropped leather. Too tall pinches the back of the knee; too short looks dressy and won't seal against the saddle flap.
Half chaps
Measure calf circumference at the widest point AND the height from the floor (in habitual paddock boots) to the bend of the knee. Both numbers appear on every ECI half-chap listing.
Lucy's note · Tip from Lucy: try the boot on at the end of the day, when your legs are at their widest. Morning measurements lie.
Section 05
Hats & Body Protectors (Safety)
We only sell hats and body protectors that meet current safety standards and are within manufacturer date. Anything we cannot verify gets refused at intake.
Hat size
Wrap a soft tape around the largest part of your head — about 2 cm above the eyebrows. Most adults sit between 56–60 cm. Hats are then sized by harness adjustability around that number.
Hat standards we accept
PAS 015:2011, VG1 01.040 2014-12, ASTM F1163 or SNELL E2016. Anything older or unmarked is refused. Pony Club, BE and IPC rules vary by discipline — check before buying for competition.
Body protector sizing
BETA Level 3 (purple label) is the standard for cross-country, hunting and racing. Sized by chest, back length and front length — all three should be measured separately. Re-checked after any hard fall.
Date check
Body protectors have a 3–5 year working life from manufacture date. Hats with any impact, drop or sun-bleach should be retired. Date and serial appear on every ECI safety listing.
Lucy's note · If a safety item arrives and the harness, foam or shell looks different from the photos, message Lucy within 48 hours. Safety stock is the one area where we refund without question.
Send Lucy your measurements.
Drop your numbers — horse and rider — on WhatsApp and we'll match you to current stock, or flag the right next piece when it lands.
